AI adoption data

AI in Construction Statistics 2026

Survey figures on AI in construction range from 8.3% to 61%, depending on who was asked and what. The Census Bureau found 8.3% of US construction businesses had used AI in the last two weeks, in a survey collected December 29, 2025 to January 11, 2026, and 16.1% in its latest cycle. AGC and Sage found 61% of firms use AI or plan to increase their investment in it.

This page lists sourced figures on AI use, plans, barriers and expectations in construction. Each figure shows its publisher, year, sample and limit. Contracts Connected compiled and checked these figures. They are third-party figures, not Contracts Connected customer data.

The numbers do not conflict. Each survey asks a different group a different question over a different period. The table below shows how they differ.

  3. Read the sample and method. We note who was counted, how, and when.
  4. State the limit. We write what the figure does not show, next to the figure.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What percent of construction firms use AI?

It depends on the survey. The Census Bureau found 16.1% of US construction businesses used AI in the last two weeks, ending October 4, 2026. Other surveys measure plans or regular use.

Why do AI adoption numbers differ so much?

Each survey asks a different group a different question in a different period. Census counts use in the last two weeks, AGC and Sage count use or plans, and RICS counts regular use worldwide.

What does the 61% figure mean?

In AGC and Sage's survey for 2026, 61% of firms said they use AI or plan to increase their investment in it. It combines current use with plans, so it is not an adoption rate.

What does the 8.3% figure mean?

In the Census Bureau's survey collected December 29, 2025 to January 11, 2026, 8.3% of US construction businesses said they had used AI in the last two weeks. The latest cycle shows 16.1%.

What do contractors use AI for?

In AGC and Sage's 2026 survey, 45% of firms use AI for office and administrative functions, 23% for estimating, 20% for design or preconstruction and 16% for recruitment, training or other HR work.

What holds AI adoption back?

RICS found the main barriers in 2025 were lack of skilled personnel (46%), system integration (37%) and poor data quality (30%). These are global respondents, and the barriers are not reasons projects failed.
